After making their first national tournament appearance in three years, the Southwest Baptist golf team is already looking ahead to the 2007-2008 season. Led by two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors, the youthful Bearcats were one of 80 teams selected to play in the 2007 Super Regional round of the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships. With all of their players returning next season, the 'Cats are eager to make the national tournament an annual event
Playing in the 16-team Central / Great Lakes Super Regional, held Monday through Wednesday, May 7-9 at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin, the young 'Cats clawed their way to a seventh place in the Central Region division. In the three-day meet, SBU's five-man team shot a 310 on the first day and a 321 on day two. With a two-day score of 631, the 'Cats stood in eighth place, trailing MIAA rival Truman State (630) by a single stroke heading into the third and final day. On day three, the 'Cats came back with a strong finish, shooting a 311 to Truman's 314, giving SBU (942) a two-shot advantage and a seventh place finish.
In addition to SBU and Truman, four other MIAA teams competed in the meet. Regular season champion Washburn (878) captured first place honors with host Missouri Southern State (895) and Central Missouri (899) finishing second and third respectively. Missouri Western State (914) notched fifth place honors, finishing behind fourth place Winona State, the defending Central Region champion. Finishing in the respective sixth, seventh and eighth spots were Bemidji State (918), SBU (942) and Truman (944).
"One of our goals was to finish ahead of Truman State," said SBU freshman Brad Nipper. "We finished just behind them in both the tournament seedings and in conference, so we knew we had a decent shot at finishing ahead of them, if we played well."
In the individual player standings, Nipper finished in a tie for 16th in a 40-man field. After shooting a 71 on the opening day of the meet, Nipper found himself in second place, just a stroke off the pace-setting score of Washburn junior Ryan Deutsch (70). On day two, Nipper shot an 82, dropping him 13 strokes behind Deutsch and out of the top 20. Rebounding with a strong finish on day three, Nipper carded a 74, which gave him his final score of 227. Deutsch earned individual medalist honors with a 3-under 213.
Other players competing 'Cats players were freshman Justin Sellin (236), juniors Clay Brandenburgh (240) and Garrett Smith (244) and sophomore Matt Hefley (245).
"It was a good experience," Nipper said. "Hopefully, we will be able to go back next season."
