However, McCoy was able to earn a NCAA provisional mark in the javelin. He currently ranks 22nd in the nation.
McCoy headed to Missouri Southern with Kirkpatrick on Thursday to try to improve his ranking and assure himself of a spot in NCAA Division II National Championship meet in Charlotte, NC.
The meet began to look even more promising for the Bearcats when senior T. Jay Sanderson stepped to the line for the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sanderson and Central Missouri sophomore Adam Akers broke away from the field early. Akers led and Sanderson followed closely behind until 40-meters remained. At the start of the bell-lap, Sanderson made his move and left Akers in the dust as the highly-decorated senior cruised to a four-second victory.
Next up for SBU was sophomore Michael Pierce and freshman Jeremy Glassmaker in the 1,500-meters. Pierce came into the event seeded third, but faced stiff competition from a couple of solid distance runners who had yet to register a good time in the event. In the race, Pierce was able to put himself in contention, but was not able to close the race the way he would have liked and finished fifth.
After the 1,500-meter run, no SBU men competed until it was Etzenhouser's turn to take on an extremely strong field in the 800-meter run finals - five of the top 30 runners in the nation hail from the MIAA.
Etzenhouser went out strong in the finals and led the race until there were 300 meters remaining. At that point, senior Eric Isley from Northwest Missouri State made his move, leaving everybody else in the field fighting for second place. Etzenhouser managed to hang on for All-MIAA honors by finishing sixth in a time of 1 minute, 56.16 seconds.
In all, the SBU men garnered five All-MIAA awards and one gold medal.
Next up for the Bearcats will be the round of last chance meets in which the athletes have one final opportunity to qualify for nationals.
As of now, Sanderson will be the only SBU athlete headed to North Carolina for nationals. Kirkpatrick and McCoy will try to join Sanderson on the plane to North Carolina by bettering their personal bests this week.
