At 10 a.m. Sept. 28, in the Jester Learning and Performance Art Center conference room, Hudgins will visit a weekly poetry workshop.
"I asked Hudgins to come to SBU after reading several of his published poems," said Dr. Mark Tappmeyer, chair, Department of Language and Literature. "We try to look for poets that would be a good fit with the personality of our campus."
Hudgins has five published books of poetry, as well as a collection of literary essays. His latest collection of poetry, "Ecstatic in the Poison," was published in 2003.
Hudgins holds a B.A. in English and History from Huntingdon College, an M.A. in English from the University of Alabama and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa.
Hudgins has been a faculty member of Ohio State University as a professor of English since 2001. Before teaching at Ohio State, Hudgins spent 16 years teaching at the University of Cincinnati. Hudgins served as the coal royalty professor of English at the University of Alabama in 1996 and was a visiting professor of Creative Writing at Johns Hopkins University in 2000.
The University Language and Literature Department has invited poets to present at the series since 1999.
The series was a gift in honor of Gene A. Barnett and Tom E. Padgett and was established by Barnett's sister Marjorie.
