Fire evacuates dorm

A small electrical fire on the first day of classes left Meyer Hall residents in alternate housing for about a week while repairs were made to the dorm's electrical wiring. Southwest Baptist University's electrician Alan Copeland discovered the fire around 2 p.

SGA & UAC prepare for fall semester

Last weekend newly elected leaders of Student Government Association (SGA) and University Activities Council (UAC) met together to decide how the restructure of the two organizations will work.

Safety and Security proposes upgrades

Mark Grabowski, director of Safety and Security, and Zeke Clawson, assistant director of Safety and Security, are laying the foundation for upgrading security around campus. Clawson has been working on a three to five year comprehensive electronic security plan that would allow only individuals with certified student or faculty IDs to enter a building after certain hours.

University awards outstanding faculty

Southwest Baptist University held the annual formal convocation during Chapel Aug. 22. Along with honoring University faculty and staff, a strategic five-year plan for SBU was announced. Dr. Janet Juhlin, director of institutional effectiveness, outlined the plan.

Rainy week leaves SBU Wellness Center soggy

The first week of classes came with rain and for the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center, leaky ceilings and a broken air conditioning system. Students with classes in the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center and those trying to fit in their daily workout routine may have noticed the uncomfortable temperatures and the rain invading the back west hallway and the weight room last week.

Work study changes implemented

Available work hours increase to involve more students

Southwest Baptist University students will notice changes in the wages and hours of the work study program this semester. Some students are frustrated with the randomness and delay of placement for work study positions. While some students have been working and getting paid for their work since last week, some are still dealing with the struggles of being assigned to a department.

Sessions prepare future graduates

Graduate school is just around the corner for some students, and before graduate school comes the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Psi Chi and the Sociology Criminal Justice Society want to help refresh skills and prepare juniors and seniors for the exam through a series of workshops.

SBU implements e2Campus

Southwest Baptist University vice president of Information and Technology Dr. Bob McGlasson announced that the Information and Technology Services area in cooperation with Safety and Security and Student Life has begun implementation of the e2Campus messaging system.

Welcome Week connects new students

Welcome Week Steering Committee, along with a staff of more than 100 returning students, welcomed around 400 new students to the Southwest Baptist University campus on Aug. 16. "I enjoyed helping with Welcome Week this year," said sophomore Mally Ulm. "I got to share my own experience of Welcome Week with the new students.

Summer renovations provide more security for students

Allen replaces Peavey after summer resignation

Southwest Baptist University announced June 29 the resignation of Head Football Coach Jack Peavey to be effective immediately. He has been replaced by Keith Allen, assistant football coach. In a letter the public, Peavey stated his plan to turn around SBU football was not successful because of a lack of understanding between him and the University.
