Southwest Baptist University held the annual formal convocation during Chapel Aug. 22. Along with honoring University faculty and staff, a strategic five-year plan for SBU was announced.
Dr. Janet Juhlin, director of institutional effectiveness, outlined the plan. According to the draft, strategic planning is "a systematic process for identifying an institution's long-range goals and determining the best approaches for achieving these goals."
Many events prompted the University to develop a new five-year plan, one year earlier than anticipated. After the Higher Learning Commission visited SBU last year, a team of University faculty, staff and students came together to form a new planning cycle. At a planning retreat, the team developed goals for the planning cycle including identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that will affect the University the most and identifying strategic initiatives that are responsive to the mission of SBU. At the end of the retreat, the team formed a strategic plan draft.
The final draft of the plan will be voted on Oct. 15 by the University's board of trustees.
During formal convocation Herb Hamann was named the 2007 Parkway Distinguished Professor. Hamann has served SBU since 1983, and in 1999, joined the faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy. The Parkway award is given each year by Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis.
Mel L. Steele was honored as the 2007 Orien B. Hendrix Distinguished Teacher. Steele has been a part of the University's faculty since 1990, when he became an assistant professor of Business Administration. Steele received his Bachelor of Science degree from SBU in 1984.
