This semester the ICS retreat was held at Rivendell Community House the weekend of Aug. 24 and 25. ICS majors and those interested in missions attended this two day retreat to hear from missionaries previously on the mission field. The group also spent time in fellowship and Bible study.
Speaking during the weekend was Melody Harper from the International Mission Board. She is a campus strategist and works to send students out on the field.
She spoke of her call to missions and how God led her to work with the International Mission Board (IMB) stateside.
Kelly Malone (a new ICS professor) and his wife Molly spoke about the fifteen years they spent working together in Japan with the IMB.
Candy Warner, who graduated from SBU, spoke on Saturday about her time in Bosnia and her mission board Frontiers.
Frontiers is a mission board that specifically ministers to the Islamic people groups throughout the world.
James Gleaves from New Tribes Mission spoke about the hardships as well as the blessings of working in the country of Colombia, South America.
Genna Chavez, an SBU graduate who has just returned from her semester abroad in South Africa was interviewed by Dr. Jim Frost, instructor of Intercultural Studies and answered questions about her term overseas.
Senior Kaila Hedger, who fell ill during her stay in Nepal, shared about her struggles with coming back to America before her term was up and how God had comforted her.
Also introduced was Christy Moore, who spent two years in a journeyman program with the IMB in Russia.
She will be living and working on the SBU campus for a year while she prepares to go abroad again.
"I'm very interested in missions," said freshman Kristin Hanson. "I've enjoyed getting to know the ICS majors and the opportunity to talk with missionaries that have recently been on the field."
Sophomore Sara Weldy, who is an ICS major, said she enjoyed "hearing the testimonies from the missionaries."
"We're looking forward to our future on the mission field, while they're looking back," said Weldy.
Frost is very excited about what happened during the weekend.
He and his wife Emily were in attendance during the retreat. Frost hopes to continue to develop the relationships with these missionaries as well as continue to grow the ICS program.
He will be leading a Bible study to continue to prepare the ICS majors spiritually. If interested in the study, please contact Pam Ferguson at pferguson@sbuniv.edu.
