The Christian bookstore We Frame It and More opened its doors for business Aug. 13, offering a variety of products to the citizens of Bolivar. Mary Hopwood, Southwest Baptist University graduate, dreamed of opening a Christian bookstore, but the opportunity never presented itself until last month.
The Writing Center strives to create a caring environment that prepares students to communicate effectively. It also provides tutorial services for students. The Writing Center is a free service for Southwest Baptist University students and faculty. The Writing Center has three objectives: it strives to provide an environment of discussion and learning, emphasizes and enhances classroom learning and assists students in recognizing and knowing how to correct their own mistakes.
On Wednesday, Student Government Association held class elections in the Goodson Student Union. The offices being voted on were freshman class president, freshman class vice president and senior class president. Dylan Sammett and Toby Brown ran for freshman class president, with Sammett coming out victorious.
Students, faculty and others trying to log onto the Southwest Baptist University website were in for a surprise when it would not load. On Aug. 28 the SBU website was out of commission. "I couldn't get on Blackboard to get notes for one of my classes," said senior Chris Dutschmann.
Due to increased demand, the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center now offers childcare from 4 to 5 p.m. during an aerobics class. This service is implemented to help faculty, staff and community members work out without worrying about their children. The Bolivar YMCA also offers childcare, and Southwest Baptist University is stepping up their game.
Each semester, Southwest Baptist University offers new classes to students in all majors. One of the classes being offered this semester is Introduction to Leadership, a military science 101 class. Taught by Major Andrew Love, this class is the lowest level of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) classes a student can take, and although it is a part of the ROTC program, all students of any major are invited to take the course.
Announcement of mission opportunities from the Missions and Ministries Office will be given Wednesday, Sept. 12 during Chapel. There will be nine opportunities to serve in the Spring and Summer semesters of 2008. In Chapel on Sept. 17 and 19, there will be a missions emphasis as Southwest Baptist University has done in previous years.
Returning students may have noticed the visible changes in their day to day dinning experiences. This past summer Mellers Dinning Commons went through several cosmetic changes as well as many menu changes. The most obvious change is the move of pizza from the Cat Snack to Mellers Dining Commons.
