It also provides tutorial services for students.
The Writing Center is a free service for Southwest Baptist University students and faculty.
The Writing Center has three objectives: it strives to provide an environment of discussion and learning, emphasizes and enhances classroom learning and assists students in recognizing and knowing how to correct their own mistakes.
"[The Writing Center is] a very helpful service and students who come here are always impressed with what they learn about writing," said Carla Kirchner, writing center director and instructor of English.
In the Writing Center, work study students and volunteers work together with students who are in need of assistance for any writing project for any class.
They work with students to help them achieve better writing results.
There are six tutors available this semester. They can assist with writing styles and documentation issues, stages of the writing process and grammatical issues.
The Writing Center is not a proofreading service. Students must be willing to work with the tutors for assistance.
"We get positive feedback from the students," said Kirchner.
Last semester there were a total of 130 sessions available to students and faculty throughout the semester.
Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments get first priority.
To schedule an appointment, call 328-1946 during business hours or drop by the Writing Center and use the posted sign-in sheet. Students must be present for and participate in their tutoring sessions.
Students who are over 10 minutes late will lose their spot.
The Writing Center is located in room 235 of the Language and Literature Department in the Jester Learning and Performance Center.
