Last week, the Student Government Association held class elections in Goodson Student Union.
Three new officers were elected reperesentatives for their class.
The only contested race was the freshman class president election between Dylan Sammet and Toby Brown.
A senior class president, freshman class president and freshman class vice president were selected.
Heather Tanck, a senior majoring in middle school math education was chosen as class president.
Her reason for running was the obvious need for involvment in her class.
"This is my first year as a member of SGA," said Tanck. "The senior class didn't really have a voice, so I decided to step up and get involved."
As far as issues she is concerned about, Tanck hopes to be a liason for her class.
"I'm really interested in student relations, about finding out what the students want to change on campus and being an advocate for them," said Tanck.
Freshman Dylan Sammet was chosen as class president.
A business management and history major, Sammet chose to be involved in SGA for learning experiences.
"Student Government was really one of the things I was truly interested in being a part of," said Sammet. "I like learning about how our political system works, and I like to see how that works on a smaller scale here."
Sammet says he has the students in mind as he begins duties as president.
"I want to do everything within my power to make SBU an attractive campus, make sure our students are safe and well informed and happy with their campus life," said Sammet.
Jordan Hart was chosen as freshman class vice-president.
When asked why he decided to run for office, Hart said he wants to encourage students.
"I wanted to have an authority role in making decisions for my class," said Hart. "I want to be able to make an active change in our community and encourage volunteerism."
Hart wants the University to be a bigger part in the town of Bolivar.
"Our campus needs to feel less secluded," said Hart. I'd like to see SBU as a bigger part of the community."
Student Government Association meetings are held at 6 p.m. Mondays in Goodson Student Union.
