Many students of Southwest Baptist University choose to stay active by participating in various intramural sports offered throughout the year.
The intramural sports seasons got off to a great start this fall. For the first eight weeks, students participate in a flag football league. This season 178 students signed up to play. A total of 12 men's teams and five women's teams have been organized.
One change players experience this year is the sportsmanship rating. After each game, both teams are evaluated and given a score according to their conduct during the activity. The idea behind the sportsmanship rating is to keep the competition an encouraging and positive experience.
"Sportsmanship encourages the students to keep our SBU code while incorporating learning to the experience," said Chris Martin, assistant director of intramurals.
Teams that win the championship advance to the regionals at Southeast Missouri State on November 10 through 12. In order to participate in this event, teams must obtain a high enough rating from sportsmanship.
The intramural program also sponsors special weekend events like sand volleyball tournaments and racquetball tournaments. The racquetball tournaments are November 3 and December 10.
Also, an ultimate frisbee league is being formed for later this fall. The frisbee league begins the last eight weeks of the semester and will be held Friday nights. More information will be given from the Student Life Office shortly.
Another opportunity for students to stay active is the indoor volleyball league scheduled for the last half of this semester. Once the spring semester rolls around both a soccer and a dodge ball league will be formed for students.
The Student Life Center hopes to continue seeing an increase in the number of participating students. Martin desires to see more female participants come out this year. His goal next year is to see a 10% increase, which would make the number of participating students around 200. He also actively pursues new ideas and opportunities to bring a variety of activities for the students.
Students have responded positively to the variety of sports offered.
"It's well organized, there is a good number of games and playing time. It's also a fun way to keep me active," said freshman Andrew Brantely, who is playing flag football.
"I love sports, and it's just a great chance to get involved," said sophomore Brook Akright.
Students interested in participating should look for fliers and posters concerning upcoming events. Information also will be available through the SBU website, or through the Student Life Center.
