Southwest Baptist University will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with several activities starting Sept. 26.
Organized by the Multicultural Student Services Program, the month of activities seeks to encourage students to learn about other cultures.
"Our goal is to educate all students about the Hispanic culture," said Amy Welch, Multicultural Program coordinator. "[We want] to recognize and support Hispanic students on campus."
The monthlong celebration will kickoff with a Fiesta Latina Wednesday, Sept. 26. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to make a piñata and papier-mache bowls, attend a bilingual poetry reading, look at Hispanic artifacts and listen to Latin music.
Prizes will be awarded to winning students participating in the piñata hitting and burrito eating contest. The competition will allow for one student per dorm to participate in the eating contest. Interested students should contact their resident director.
Free food will be provided at the Fiesta Latina. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 on the Burnidge Memorial Forum. In case of rain, the fiesta will be held in Goodson Student Union.
Mellers Dining Commons will provide a Mexican dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. A mariachi band will play at the dinner.
Sonshine Ball Room will be on campus at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Blair Intramural Gym to provide students free Latin dance lessons. Following the lessons, sopapillas and ice cream will be served and some of SBU's Hispanic students will share about "la familia," their families and culture.
During the second week of October, the University Activities Council will host a Hispanic Bingo Night. Details were not available at the time of publication.
Nationally, Hispanic Heritage Month is held Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. It was established to celebrate the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
