Like many universities, the forum is the focal point of the campus. This is the same at Southwest Baptist University. Everyone who steps on our campus comes into contact with the Burnidge Memorial Forum.
This forum is often the first place prospective students see when they enter the campus.
Many concerts are held in Pike Auditorium, which requires you to go the Burnidge Memorial Forum. College students walk through it every day to get to and from classes.
In the center of the Burnidge Memorial Forum is the fountain.
If you have not noticed lately the fountain is currently serving as an eye-sore on the forum. There are big patches of bricks missing in different places around the fountain and weeds growing up in the cracks at its base.
Students have become frustrated with how poorly the fountain is looking and brought their concerns to Student Government Association.
After many complaints were brought in, the campus beautification committee in Student Government Association bumped the fountain up to top priority.
Students formed a petition that reads: "As students we are concerned with the look of things on our campus. Our first issue of concern is the fountain located in the Merrill Burnidge Memorial Forum. There are bricks missing from the fountain, and it is currently serving as an eye-sore on the forum. The fountain can be a beautiful thing that really gives our campus a face-lift. We would really appreciate it if the fountain could get fixed so that we can have the best looking campus possible. Please respond and let us know when the University plans on addressing this issue."
The petitions were circulated to all SGA representatives and officers.
If you are passionate about making our campus the best it can possibly be then we would encourage you to sign a petition.
If you would like to pick up a petition and take it around to get signatures, they are available to any student who is interested.
Extra copies of the petition are located in the SGA office, and when they are completed, they are to be dropped off there as well.
When SGA receives several hundred signatures, those petitions will be taken to the administration.
We are hoping to turn them in and get a response from administration by the end of September. SGA will keep students posted as to the future of the fountain when we receive an answer.
It is encouraging to see students coming together caring about the appearance of the campus. The fountain is the start of many issues students want to see acted upon on the campus.
Action starts with you, the students. Student Government is your voice to the administration.
That is why we are so eager to hear any ideas, comments or suggestions you might have pertaining to our campus.
If you would like to speak out or just listen while issues are discussed, Student Government has meetings every Monday at 6 p.m. in Davis Theater in Goodson Student Union.
There is also an email address: sga@sbuniv.edu. We look forward to hearing feedback.
We hope the fountain serves as the first of many positive actions taken on our campus this year by students.

Wal-Mart has always been good about helping out in local communities. I know that each store is encouraged to give away a certain amount of money each year. (Continued…)
