In a three game decision, the Southwest Baptist University Lady Bearcats fell to Pittsburg State University last Wednesday night. The Gorillas, who are ranked 18th in the nation, hit a three game average of .366. SBU in comparison hit a .081 for the evening.
"We played a very good nationally ranked team." said Richardson. "We got to see good things in our team and things that still need to be worked on. By far this was the best match up for us this year."
After the pains and toils of the loss at Pittsburg, the Bearcats headed back on the road for the Bearcat Classic in Maryville. While at Northwest Missouri State University, the Bearcats picked up two victories to add to their record. The wins came against Texas A&M International University and Newman University, in which the second time this year SBU won the match in three games. Those matches were balanced out by two losses to #17 Augustana College and South Dakota University. The Bearcats looked to upset Augustana with a game one win, but after losing a 10 point lead in game two, SBU struggled to regain momentum.
When asked about the overall thoughts of the tournament Coach Richardson said, "These were very good teams. Augustana is the 17th team in the nation and South Dakota is going Division 1 next year. Overall, I believe that the coaching staff is very pleased with what we saw. If anything, we saw the team coming together to be a more united group."
The two wins over the weekend put the Bearcats at 5-8 (0-1 MIAA). This ties last year for the most wins.
Libero Shyrah Perry averaged a tournament-high 6.8 digs per game. This allowed her to be named to the all-tournament at NWMSU.
SBU now has had an all-tournament selection for each tournament this year.
Brittni Jessen had a team season high of 24 kills in the Augustana match.
The Lady Bearcats continue MIAA play Friday against #17 University of Central Missouri at 7:00 p.m.
