Missouri Western State University president Dr. James Scanlon released the following statement Friday, Sept. 7:
"We at Missouri Western State University are proud of Western's record of NCAA rules compliance. As President of the University, I am committed to operating Western's intercollegiate athletics program within both the letter and the spirit governing NCAA and MIAA conference rules and regulations.
"We are looking into the possibility that extra benefits were provided inappropriately to some former members of the women's basketball team during their playing careers. We have informed the NCAA of this investigation. I have appointed an administrative team of Beth Wheeler, director of external relations, and Dan Nicoson, vice president for university advancement, to conduct the investigation.
"My overriding desire in this matter is to obtain a complete and unbiased review of the facts so that the full truth is discovered. Only in this way can the University maintain its integrity, which is of paramount importance to all of us at Western. To protect the integrity of the investigation, we will have no further comment until it is complete."
