Two years ago on Aug. 25, 2005, British Rock sensation James Blunt captured the hearts of Americans with the line "My Life is Brilliant". Listening to Blunt's raspy, calming and unmatchable voice sing to an untouchable angle in the song "You're Beautiful" left an imprint on minds.
Tuesday Sept. 18, with the release of his new album "All the Lost Souls", Blunt did not fail to impress fans.
Blunt, a former Captain in the British Army, signed his first contract with EMI in 2002. In early 2003, he was signed to Custard Records by Linda Perry, former band member of 3 Non Blondes, leading to his worldwide association with Atlantic Records. His first album "Back to Bedlam" was released in the United States in Oct, 2005, one year after its United Kingdom release.
Anyone who enjoyed the album "Back to Bedlam" will definitely love "All the Lost Souls".
The album begins with a beautiful piano composition called "1973". The percussion is added at just the right time with a fascinating beat that pulls you into the music. The song is about old memories and the changing of friendships which anyone can relate to. Many people have memories of a moment in time, which they cannot return to, spent with one particular friend. This song captures that feeling in a catchy tune.
As each song goes along it brings you more into the feelings of both despair and hope that can be easily related to. The songs ask questions and make statements that are often asked or thought secretly. There are songs about being tired and worn out from life. There are songs about repeating the same mistakes, and there are songs about wanting independence and freedom to break the mold of others standards.
The song "I Really Want You" brings to life a sound that is new and exciting. It brings together a fast paced off beat with soft melodic vocals. The echo effect it has with the chorus is fascinating and entrancing. With lines like "Did the beggar pray for a sunny day, but Lady Luck for rain?", the lyrics bring thoughts about how and why some wishes are met and others miss out. The music has a sound that only a voice like Blunt's could compliment so well.
Blunt does a good job of starting songs out one way, changing beats and sounds for the chorus, later resuming the original sound without loosing the audience in the transitions.
The last three songs come back down to a more solemn calming pace but remain unique and interesting. Blunt has made his own sound and has kept himself from falling into a typical pattern of copycat music that so many other artists fall into. Blunt is successfully creative with his album "All the Lost Souls", and I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to listen to a-typical music.
