When the Daily Grind (RIP) collapsed during the ice term last January, it left a void in the Bolivar economy as well as the hearts of many students of Southwest Baptist University.
Morsels attempted to fill the void, but Morsel's limited hours of operation were not conducive to the average college student's schedule.
Finally, nine months after the tragic fate of the Daily Grind, a coffeehouse has opened in Bolivar, giving SBU students a local place to congregate off campus.
The Java Station is located in the fairly new Vineyard Square between Bolivar Physical Therapy and Quilted Hearts. When you enter the Java Station, you are hit with the new coffeehouse smell since the building is still very new.
The openness of the space and the fluorescent lights hinder the cozy coffeehouse atmosphere the Daily Grind had, but beggars cannot be choosers, and we of Bolivar are definitely beggars when it comes to coffeehouses.
Customers can order their food and beverages and choose between the five tables, couch or a long bar to visit with friends, do homework or play some of the games available.
The reading available to customers is odd for a coffeehouse including magazines like "Missouri Conservationist" and "Ducks Unlimited."
Enough about the atmosphere, the coffee and food is why you are really reading this article.
The menu is cute and varied with the train theme of the coffeehouse's name is echoed throughout the menu items. I ordered the Train Track Turtle a.k.a. the turtle latte, a staple of most coffeehouses.
This is my fallback drink at coffeehouses if I do not recognize any drinks at a new coffeehouse.
The Train Track Turtle came to me in a glass mug topped with whipped cream and caramel and chocolate syrup. It was good, really sweet, but good.
Other lattes and cappuccinos on the menu that I am dying to try right now are German Chocolate, S'more, Mocha, Steamer and two I have not tried before: the Choo Choo Cherry Cordial and Railway Rocky Road.
If you want something with more kick to it try the flavored espressos: Toot Toot Tootsie Roll, the Java Express, Dutch Apple Pie or the Train Wreck. All of these drinks range in price from $1.50 to $3.50 and come with whipped cream.
You can also order bottomless tea or coffee from the pump for $1.25.
If you are not a fan of the hot drinks, there are smoothies, Italian sodas, water and bottled soda available.
The Java Station also sells wraps, soups and desserts including a club wrap, daily soup special and dessert of the day.
The Java Station is open Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The Java Station is closed on Sundays.
