Every semester Driskell Art Gallery, located in Jester Learning and Performance Center, has a student art show featuring the work of current Southwest Baptist University art students. This semester's show is running from Sept. 17 until Oct. 12.
All work submitted must have been made for a class at SBU, and each student is asked to submit at least two pieces. Most students submit work in several categories. The final choice of which pieces will be displayed is made by Gallery Director Diana Callahan.
The categories featured are photography, printmaking, graphic design, pottery, digital imaging, portrait drawing and painting, mixed media and sculpture.
There will be a reception held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Art Gallery.
This is a time for the student artists to show off their work and converse with SBU Alumni.
"I call this show a 'Push Pin' show because a lot of the pieces come right out of the classroom and are not necessarily professionally presented," said Callahan.
The gallery now has piped in music to help create an ambiance while visitors browse the art work.
The pieces in the show are all very unique, and the talent in the department really shows. All the categories are adequately represented.
One piece in particular, a mixed media by senior Corey Rutledge, is very eye catching. The piece, entitled "Camping Memories", incorporates eight images, CD's, twigs, matches, leafs and paint. The images are tied together by paint which makes for a very entrancing piece well worth spending time viewing.
This show creates a time for students to support their peers and see the talent and skill coming out of the SBU Art Department.
Anyone with a few extra minutes on their hands should stop in and see the show.
The gallery is open for viewing between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
