Southwest Baptist University Student Government Association has added a campus wide Dorm Council for students to communicate with SGA and campus administration.
"We felt the distribution of power was too centralized," said SGA Student Body President senior Ivry Karamitros.
Currently, the SGA structure is made up by the executive council and then by class officers.
SGA decided that because most of the University's population lives on campus, it would be beneficial to have representation in student government from these students.
"Many other collegiate student governments are primarily led by their dorm councils," said Karamitros. "I found several student government constitutions from other universities, spoke with their leaders, and I concluded that SBU could do the same thing."
SGA members met with Student Activities Director Zach Waters, Amy Welch, Director of Residence Life and all campus resident directors to discuss what type of dorm councils were currently in place, how they worked and what the relationship between SGA and Residence Life looked like.
"[Welch] and I have been communicating about how the structure and relationship between Residence Life and SGA will be defined," said Karamitros. "We will be putting a constitution together and will present it to [students living on campus] and SGA for vote."
The basic structure of Dorm Council will look similar to this.
Each dorm's resident director will be primarily responsible for making sure their dorm has a council of students who are interested in campus unity.
This council of students will elect or appoint a senator to represent their entire dorm population.
The senator will be responsible for all the concerns of their dorm's residents and must communicate with the effectively and efficiently with SGA.
If the resolution is passed, this idea could become a permanent part of the student government structure at SBU.
SGA will hold a student question and answer session this semester to provide students with more information about Dorm Council before it goes to vote.
"We really feel this level of representation will help bring unity and effective communication to our student body," said Karamitros. "This is the primary goal of Residence Life and SGA, and we feel Dorm Council is the answer."
