Out of the preliminary and unofficial current enrollment of 1,560 undergraduate students enrolled at the Bolivar campus, 710 freshmen, sophomores and juniors responded to the Student Government Association survey during Chapel Sept. 10. An additional 74 seniors responded, but as of press time their results have not been tabulated and so are not included.
The main goal of the survey is to help SGA decide the best way to communicate events, opportunities and issues with the students and for the University Activities Council to better serve and inform students about upcoming events and activities.
There are many ways for students to find out what is happening on campus, but according to survey results, students are not checking Kwik Chek or the SBU online calendar.
While eight percent say they almost always look at Kwik Chek, 65 percent say they almost never look at Kwik Chek. The numbers for the online calendar are at 14 percent and 46 percent respectively.
Another way SGA will try to inform students is through the new links on the "Current Students" page of the SBU website.
From there, links will go to the student activities page which will lead to the new SGA and UAC pages as well as other campus pages.
Since 79 percent of students say they would watch the website if it was up-to-date with details of events and activities, Director of Student Activities Zach Waters hopes to have the new sites up and running within the next week or two.
Another area of concern is voter turnout for various campus elections and contests.
When asked if they would vote more often for SGA elections such as Homecoming queen and Courtwarming king, 558 of the 710 respondents said they would vote online.
Waters says Blackboard will host the first official online election for this year's Homecoming queen.
During the weekends, 51 percent of students said they would probably attend activities at SBU; while 14% said they were "bored."
In response, Waters said they are working hard at trying to get a feeling for what students want, but without student input, it is difficult to formulate an overall plan.
A perfect example is the results from the survey about what bands students would like to see at SBU.
