Everything in society seems to be advancing down a technological route. Even the way Student Government Association holds elections is progressing.
Remember seeing a self check-out for the first time and thinking it seemed like a crazy idea?
What about the new video vendors that sit outside some supermarkets and McDonald's? They allow choosing a movie through the vending machine just like candy and pay using a debit or credit card.
These ideas are sometimes greeted with hesitance, but in a matter of time they are staples to everyday culture.
Southwest Baptist University is stepping up to the plate and moving with the trend of technology. All of the SGA elections are going to be done electronically.
Previous elections have been at a booth outside the SGA. Students can be sitting in their dorm rooms doing homework and vote at the same time.
Voting will be accessed through Kwik Check. It will be set up like normal elections where each voter can only vote once.
Normally the polls are open after Chapel until 6 p.m., but because of the new convenience that online voting provides, the polls will be open earlier from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
To cut down on any confusion there will be a computer outside of the SGA office on the day of elections with a student representative to help assist through the voting process. It is not required to use this computer. It will be there for your convenience.
The next election will be held on Sept. 26 to elect the 2007 SBU Homecoming queen.
This is a great opportunity to try out the new online voting. Remember, it is only a click away.
For any new ideas like online voting, email SGA at sga@sbuniv.edu or visit a meeting at 6 p.m. in Davis Theater Monday.
