For the third week in a row, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats set themselves up with a chance to bring home a road victory, and for the third week in a row, the Bearcats fell short, this time a 35-28 loss at the hands of the Emporia State Hornets.
Leading up to the game, the Hornets had only given up 10 points all season, but SBU was able to put up 28 points, all in the first half.
The Bearcats went into halftime up 28-21, and the score remained the same through three quarters of play.
SBU held that lead until Emporia State was able to tie it up on a long touchdown reception with just over five minutes to go. On the ensuing possession, the Bearcats turned the ball over on downs, and the Hornets had a long touchdown run up the middle for the go-ahead score and eventual game winner.
The 'Cats struck first and stunned the MIAA's top defense on their first drive of the game when redshirt freshman quarterback Steve Gachette hit senior LaMarcus Windham in the corner of the end zone for a six-yard touchdown.
The touchdown drive was set up by freshman Paul Jordan's 33-yard kick return which allowed the offense to start near the 50-yard line.
After Emporia State's first touchdown of the game, Chris Tejeda broke through the line to tip the extra point to the side and prevent the Hornets from tying the game up.
After an interception returned for a touchdown by Emporia State and a converted two-point conversion to tie up the game, Gachette scored again, this time on the ground, when he kept the ball on a zone read and ran around the right end for a 12-yard touchdown.
To lead off the second quarter, Gachette again connected with Windham for a two-yard touchdown strike, and after kicker Jeremy Ware's second attempt at the PAT, the Bearcats took the lead by a score of 21-14.
