In total it was 17 matches, five games and well over 2,000 miles, but the Southwest Baptist Volleyball team finally comes home to show the University the changes that lie ahead for their program.
The Bearcats started the fourth week of the regular season with a crippling loss to MIAA rival Northwest Missouri State in three games. Sophomore Kelsey Stewart led SBU with ten kills, and senior Chelsea Kenney led the team with 12 digs.
After a weak Wednesday night of volleyball, the Bearcats traveled to Warrensburg on Friday to take on the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Jennies of Central Missouri.
SBU took a step in a new direction from past years and stayed close to the Jennies through all three games. However, the Lady 'Cats fell short in all three games.
The final game ended 30-26. Sophomore Brittni Jensen and Stewart totaled 20 kills, half of the Bearcat's total for the game.
"I was proud of the girls to be able to run neck and neck with the number-five team in the country," said Head Coach Kelly Richardson. "That is something to be proud of. It's progress."
To end a productive, yet long week, SBU traveled to Rolla, Mo. on Saturday night to compete against the Lady Miners.
The Bearcats ended a long weekend on a high note as they defeated the Lady Miners in three games to improve their record to 6-10. Sophomore Kinsey Palmer led all players with 21 digs.
"Rolla was a good team, a young team, but a good team," said Richardson. "I am proud of the team to put the past behind them, play hard Friday against one of the top teams in the nation, and then to bring home a win on Saturday. It'll be nice to be home."
SBU's first home game of the season will be tonight at 7 p.m. against the eighth-ranked Truman State Bulldogs.
