Easy solution found in new technology:

Student voices need for chapel expansion

Charlotte Holman

Issue date: 9/28/07 Section: Forum
I see two alternatives to this dilemma: do not require Chapel or provide a means for all students to attend safely. I do not want this article to turn into an attack on the legitimacy of requiring or not requiring Chapel. I don't mind going to Chapel. I'm all for the second solution of finding a way to accommodate our growing student body in a safe way.
Dr. C. Pat Taylor, president of SBU, said in his speech during this year's formal convocation (an always packed Chapel service) that the University needs to build a bigger building for Chapel because the University is growing. Well, we need it now or at least an alternative until one can be built.
Currently SBU has the technology to videotape Chapel services, but with some work, Chapel services could be broadcast to the Mabee Chapel classrooms. This would provide extra seating for latecomers like myself to enjoy Chapel services without causing a fire hazard. With some added technology purchased and installed, Chapel services could even be broadcast to other theaters on campus such as Davis Theater in Goodson Student Union, Meyer Recital Hall or Davis-Newport Theater.
Azusa Pacific University uses this method to accommodate students on the West Campus during the chapel service held on the East Campus that is located several blocks and a trolley ride away.
If the Chapel service was broadcast into the Davis-Newport Theater, there would be the added benefit of students in Jester Learning Center being able to attend Chapel without being late to class afterwards. Sure this system would cost money, but I think that obeying fire codes and keeping students safe in case of emergency would be worth it.

It's amazing how such a simple solution, that would solve a couple problems, will probably take a few years to get taken care of. Along with it being safer, I also think it would encourage chapel attendence. (Continued…)
