Free ethnic food was also available to any student walking past, including taquito rolls, mini chicken tacos, chips and salsa provided by El Rodeo, as well as Mexican cookies and candy, including chili powder covered lollipops.
The fiesta was lively and gave a good sample of the Hispanic culture.
The event was planned for three weeks by the new Multi-Cultural Student Services Program, which is run by Amy Welch, director of Residence Life and Multicultural Program Coordinator.
The committee members include junior Aaron Streeter, freshman Anna Tarleton from Russia, junior Mallory McMillan, junior Krista Juliff, sophomore Akousia Offa-Danso from Ghana, senior Nora Scott, freshman Sue-Melissa from Haiti, senior Kristen Blinzler and Beasley Hall Resident Director Landee Nevills.
"In the past we just had the dancing lessons, so I am glad that we expanded to the fiesta this year," said Juliff. "Because it was during the day it drew more awareness."
The Multicultural Student Services Program is trying to incorporate more day programming for all of the cultural programs so that more students have the ability to be involved.
"Residence Life has more committees this year," said Welch. "We looked for students of all backgrounds and included RA's. We want anyone on campus who has a passion for diversity."
The committee will continue to meet to plan new events throughout the year including Native American History Month, Black History Month and Asian/Pacific Islander History Month. They also plan to add events such as Cajun Day.
If any students are interested in joining the committee they can contact Welch in the Residence Life office for more information.
The Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will continue with free Latin dance lessons from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 in the Blair Intramural gym.
Refreshments and the ethnic dessert sopapillas, a fried tortilla served with ice cream and honey, will be served following the dancing.
The ethnic events will conclude with a Hispanic Grocery Bingo Night at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 in Goodson Student Union.
Chips and salsa will be served to all participants.
Competitors will have the opportunity to win free groceries for their bingo winnings.
