The Jim Mellers Center dedication Chapel on Monday was overflowing with both students and University dignitaries.
Unbeknownst to most of the audience, this joyful day was interrupted with news of the death of senior Kris Beasley, and the hospitalization of senior Rebecca Cook.
Although the dedication began on a somber note, after a moment of silence and a prayer, the celebrating commenced.
Dr. C. Pat Taylor, president of Southwest Baptist University, focused his main address on the subject of the construction of buildings at SBU.
"Your tuition does not pay for buildings," said Taylor.
Taylor stressed the reliance on donors who have supplied SBU with the resources needed to help update our campus.
He pointed to Killian Construction Company as being largely responsible for the renovation. Renovations were completed in time for the fall semester.
Killian Construction is also the same company that built the Meyer Wellness and Sports Center.
Richard Wright, president of the Board of Curators of Redford College, spoke from an alumni perspective on the new building
"Do not take our wonderful godly atmosphere for granted," said Wright.
Wright further told students that the graduates of SBU care greatly for the well being of current students and want future students to have adequate facilities.
Dr. Rodney Reeves, dean of the Courts Redford College of Theology and Church Vocations, gave the Chapel address focusing on the new Jim Mellers Center. Reeves emphasized a common need for all people.
"[To have] a sacred place, where you could shut away the cares of this world," said Reeves.
He asserted that the Jim Mellers Center was not that sacred place.
The sacred place was the inscription of Christ on each person's hearts and that Christ's love was the only thing that could make us sacred.
Laughs were shared when he commented on the Redford majors who were spread throughout campus last year without a home.
Reeves spoke of how the students made t-shirts and called themselves part of the 'Diaspora'.
Students in Bible classes found themselves intermingling with students in other disciplines.
"We must convert the pagan colleges among us," said Reeves, jokingly.
The dedication Chapel closed with a benedicion.
Following the Chapel ceremony, a special dedication was held at the Jim Mellers Center itself.
