Students who venture far from their home to attend college may have a hard time at birthdays.
Many students, including international and missionary kids, are unable to be with their families on their birthday. Thanks to the Women's Club, birthdays can be special in a dorm.
Nancy Gallatin, cake coordinator for the Southwest Baptist University Women's Club, spreads birthday cheer during the fall and spring semesters.
Gallatin is the wife of retired European history professor Harvey Gallatin and the mother of current Art professor at SBU Morgan Gallatin.
Gallatin is a retired elementary school teacher of 31 years.
Now, she is the cake coordinator for the SBU Women's Club and has been for the past three years.
Gallatin's work includes sending out letters to parents at the beginning of each semester, collecting orders and money, getting volunteers to help furnish the treats and keeping deadlines.
Also, she helps get the first orders sent out on time by making and delivering the treats herself.
This task is not easy, and Gallatin spends much of her time getting everything organized and put together.
Gallatin and assistant coordinator, Jennifer Smith, have many volunteers helping to make these things as easy as possible. There are currently 35 volunteers.
"I like for them not to have to do it more than once a month."Gallatin said.
The treats are delivered to the address written on the order form.
This may be either on-campus or off campus.
Also, since the volunteers are so kind, they provide international students free treats.
The money raised by the orders is spread among the different departments on campus.
Some things that have been purchased by the Women's Club include: trash cans in various places on campus, benches, teaching aids for the Education Department, some of the flags in the Sells Building, instruments for the Music Department and film filters for the Art Department.
The project for this year has yet to be determined.
There will be a meeting held on Sept. 25 to send out the letters to the departments.
The departments will then decide what they need or would like for their department, and the Women's Club will agree on a certain project.
During this semester alone over $1300 has been raised.
"This month alone I have had over 70 items ordered for people to make," said Gallatin.
Last year over $1500 was raised. This project is a big hit and its demand is growing.
Gallatin enjoys seeing all of the thank you notes.
Parents say they are so grateful and that these ladies are such a blessing.
Gallatin wants everyone to know that this is a project that is on a volunteer basis for the parents. Without these volunteers and the efforts of Gallatin, birthdays at SBU would not be as special.
