This year as many of you have noticed, a fall break has not been worked into the school calendar. I decided to further explore why in recent years there has been a fall break and why we do not have one this year. I spoke with Rob Harris, dean of students.
Last year this time, the voter turnout for homecoming queen was only 1/4 of the turnout this year. With this improvement of voter turnout this year the SBU Student Government Association claims the superiority of the new electronic voting system. Truly it brings more student involvement to a largely apathetic, uninvolved campus.
It is nice to know that the bricks to repair the fountain are now at the Physical Plant. This will improve the view of the Forum. While I applaud that the eyesore is under repair, another eyesore that is far more disrespectful to the students and the University still exists.
Homecoming week provided students many ways to get involved in dorm competitions. On Monday, Oct 1, Students filed into Blair Intramural Gym to start off the Homecoming week with a bang. Students met the members of the University's fall sports teams and were involved in different activities to show their spirit and to try to earn dorm points.
A contest blending Homecoming dorm competition and a mission trip fundraiser continues Friday during lunch and supper and Saturday during lunch in the Goodson Student Union outside Mellers Dining Commons. The "Race to Africa" pits Southwest Baptist University dorms against each other and against faculty and staff as they make donations in exchange for colored paper rings linked together in chains.
It's Homecoming week at Southwest Baptist University. The smells of freshly mown grass and dorm spirit fill the air under a crystal blue sky. Monday began the annual dorm competition extravaganza. The campus is a sea of dorm colors, from bright pink donned by the women of Beasley, to yellow on the ladies of Leslie, to orange for Maupin men.
In September, Southwest Baptist University students selected Homecoming princesses and queen candidates. Senior SBU students selected five senior girls as Homecoming queen candidates. Kristen Blinzler is an elementary education major from Monett. Crystal Chesnut is psychology major from Edgertotn.
