It's Homecoming week at Southwest Baptist University.
The smells of freshly mown grass and dorm spirit fill the air under a crystal blue sky. Monday began the annual dorm competition extravaganza.
The campus is a sea of dorm colors, from bright pink donned by the women of Beasley, to yellow on the ladies of Leslie, to orange for Maupin men.
The competition has undergone some changes this year. Instead of an overall accumulation of dorm points, individual prizes will be awarded to event winners throughout the week. The biggest overall prize of $300 will be given for event participation for each dorm.
Attendance points will be based upon percentage of students in attendance for each dorm, rather than total number. This way, smaller dorms can be accommodated.
Senior Brian Maloy, a resident assistant in Gott Hall, believes the changes to the competition have been beneficial.
"So far this year, this being my fourth homecoming and second year as an RA, it's running much more smoothly," said Maloy. "Everyone seems to be having much more fun now that it's been toned down quite a bit. This is my favorite one so far, and I am much more able to enjoy it than I ever have been."
Sophomore Becca Koe is the chair of the University Activities Council's Major Events Committee. She was pleased with the way events were progressing.
"The week so far has been very fast paced," said Koe. "I wanted it to be something fun that the students enjoyed and appreciated. Homecoming isn't just about the alumni or a theme, it's about school pride and dorm pride. That's what we really want to bring out with the dorm competitions and spirit activities."
Winner of dorm attendance completion will be announced at the football game.
