It is a shame that Christian denominations do not play well with others. On June 15, 2004, the Southern Baptist Convention voted to withdraw from the Baptist World Alliance because in the eyes of the SBC, the BWA was becoming too liberal. The Alliance is a voluntary confederation of over 200 Baptist groups with 46 million members worldwide. So it would appear that ecumenicist unity is out.
Besides the ecumenical symbolism, the Christian flag is generic. The University seal is distinct. The Christian flag has a cross but so does the seal. SBU should be proud of its seal. There certainly is a nice version of it in the entryway to Jester.
To some people, the Christian flag says Sunday school and summer camps. To everyone SBU's seal says "Educatio per Christum." I am not taking anything away from the Christian flag, but honestly, does the Christian flag or the University's own seal better represent the University's mission statement, vision statement and core values?
Regardless of the University's decision about replacing the Christian flag with the University seal, the flags in the circle must be replaced.
While there is no monetary fine applicable for violating the Flag Code, it is a violation of the respect that should be shown towards the greatest symbol of this country.
While not pristine, the flags in front of the Sells Administration Building are immensely better than those in the circle, but why not replace them as well?
If the administration does not want to replace the Christian flag, then why not erect a fourth flag pole to fly the seal? SBU should be proud to fly a giant purple flag with a white university seal on it in the circle as well as along Springfield Avenue to show our true colors to all that pass by.
