Songwriter and vocalist Dennis Jernigan's newest song, "You Are the Strength of My Life," from the CD "I Cry Holy" could be the theme song for a new initiative on the campus of Southwest Baptist University.
Jernigan will be appearing in Chapel on Monday, October 15, at 10 a.m. to share his testimony and minister through his music. His presentation marks the first in a series of events coordinated by the committee for Applied Christian Living, which lists the following as its purpose:
"To organize events and educative presentations that will engage students in dialogue concerning real-life issues, especially where the Christian worldview collides with the greater culture. Students will gain a biblical and psychological understanding of these issues and learn ways to balance grace and truth in speaking to these issues."
According to Dean of Students Rob Harris, "The committee is comprised of faculty and staff who desire to support SBU students in gracefully and truthfully applying a Christ-centered perspective to issues our culture may perceive differently." Harris said issues being considered for discussion include sexuality, poverty, gambling, pornography, and environmental concerns.
Jernigan, a former homosexual, says this about his new song: "This song is my heart song," he says. "As I learn more about laying down my life for the sake of others, I know I must become more and more transparent. It is through a transparent life that His light is free to shine. And when His light is allowed to shine through freely, His power is released to do far more than we ever imagined. No other god could ever do what my God does! No other god can take a homosexual and make him a new person. No other god could take a prostitute and make her a completely new person with new desires."
Having lived as a homosexual in his college years, Jernigan was delivered from what he describes as blatant sin.
Jernigan has been married to his wife Melinda for over 23 years, and their nine children range in age from 23 to twin boys who are 13.
Jernigan also will be performing at the First Baptist Church of Bolivar on Sunday, October 14, at 6:30 p.m.
