This year's theatre season's theme is "Timeless." The theme will not only be reflected in the main stage performances, the students showcase, the festival of shorts, the improvise night but also in the thematic Bible verses that the theatre department has chosen to represent this school year's productions.
The first Bible verse that was selected is "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven," Ecclesiastes 3:1
"The season's theme is 'Timeless' because all the stories being preformed are timeless," said Dr. Elissa Sartwell, assistant professor of Theatre. "They speak to the human condition regardless of the historical background."
The season will be kicked off with a night of improvisational theatre Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. during Homecoming weekend in the Davis-Newport Theatre. The cost will be $1 for everyone at the door.
The first main stage production of the semester will be "Little Woman." It will show Nov. 8-10 and cost $2 for students, $3 for SBU alumni, senior citizens and other students and $5 for general admission.
The cast has been rehearsing for the performance since the semester began and has been working diligently on the set. The set will include a giant tree built by Technical Director Chaz Bell that will be climbed by an actress during the production. The tree was an experiment and the first of its kind at SBU.
The Theatre Department hopes to start creating more of a community environment by bringing in high school and middle school students from the surrounding areas.
The second show will be "Festival of Shorts." This will run Dec. 6-8. It is a replacement for the "One Acts." The performances will be shorter than the one act plays traditionally are but the evening will provide more pieces with more of a variety. The "Festival of Shorts" will be $1 for everyone and will be in the Davis-Newport Theatre.
The first production of the spring semester will be the timeless musical "Fiddler on the Roof." "Fiddler on the Roof" will be performed in Pike Auditorium, March 6-8. It will cost $3 for SBU students, $5 for SBU Alumni, $7 for general admission in advance and $8 for general admission at the door.
