Four alumni of Southwest Baptist University have been recognized in 2007-2008 for their lifetimes of service to the institution.
Philip Dorth, G. Norman Weaver, Randy Arnett and James Hackney were selected as the 2007 recipients of the Life Service Award. The award is presented to alumni who exhibit the characteristics of SBU as described in the University's mission statement.
Dorth is a graduate of Southwest Baptist College, class of 1952, where he received his Associate of Arts degree. In 1970, he earned an Ed.s. degree from Central Missouri State University.
He married Ginny (Comer) Dorth (SWBC '52) in 1955. The couple has three children: Steven, David and Brenda.
Dorth served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955.
He is currently serving on the Missouri Association of Rural Education as associate director and has been doing so since 1992.
Dorth also serves as chairman of deacons and Sunday school superintendent at his local church.
"There is no way to fully express my sincere gratitude for being selected as a recipient of the Life Service Award," said Dorth. "I am appreciative of this honor but feel so undeserving."
G. Norman Weaver is a 1941 alumnus of SWBC and received his A.E. in elementary education and in 1976 received an Ed. D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He married Garnet (Newton) Weaver (SWBC'40). The couple has three children: Ann Elizabeth, Marcia Sue and David Norman.
Weaver served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1953-56. He also taught at elementary, high school and university levels, including SWBC from 1950 to 1957.
He is currently serving as an interim pastor, pulpit supply, a part-time minister of education director, VBS director and is involved in church choir.
"I am humbled to be chosen to receive this award and wish to express my thanks to Southwest Baptist as an institution of Christian higher education and to those who chose me on this occasion above all the other worthy alumni," said Weaver.
