Closing out their road trip with a win proved to be quite a battle for the Southwest Baptist women's soccer team. The Bearcats came out and set the pace early by dominating possession and not allowing Emporia State to breathe. In the third minute, the constant pressure finally caused the Hornets' defense to crack. Freshman forward Dominie Emmanuel notched the first goal of the match when she bulged the back of the net on a follow from a shot that ricocheted of the cross bar from the powerful foot of sophomore midfielder Caitlin Tull.
In the 12th minute, Emporia State answered back when Amanda Miano found some space and put a shot in the upper 90 and out of the reach of Bearcat keeper Aline Lopes.
After the Hornets' goal, the Lady 'Cats continued to push and put pressure on the Emporia State defense. In the 32nd minute, their efforts were rewarded when senior Christina Swartz placed a beautiful cross onto the waiting head of Tull, and the ball arched into the upper left-hand corner of the goal to give Southwest Baptist the lead at 2-1.
This score held for the remainder of the game as the Lady Bearcats were frustrated on numerous scoring attempts.
The Lady Bearcats outshot the Hornets by a staggering 30-7 margin.
While the Lady Bearcats dominated the shot attempts and won the game there were some areas of concern for the Bearcat coaching staff.
"It's a win but we did not play well tonight," said Head Coach Ben Wade.
Southwest Baptist struggled at times in the second half to put pressure on Emporia State and found themselves on their heels and working harder than they wanted to on the defensive end.
