Issue date: 10/5/07 Section: Sports
A huge block by sophomores Kinsey Palmer and Trish Hammerschmidt set the Bearcats at 3-0, and the team took off from there. Senior Chelsea Kenney made a quick dump to make it 8-3.
However, the tide changed for a moment as MSSU started to make a rally. It started at 11-4 then it was 12-6 then 12-9 and, those that remembered last years match could only remember SBU holding the lead at 14 and losing the match 17-15 in the final points.
Would history repeat itself? The crowds of both teams started to get louder. You could feel the tension of the girls on the court.
Then Palmer sent a screaming hit across the court.
The defender missed it.The ball fell inside the court. The point went for SBU. The final score was 15-11.
"We had three very good days of practice," said Richardson. "You could tell when the girls stepped onto the court that they wanted this. They did very well bouncing back from games two and three. It's definitely a forward step for this program to do that. It's very exciting to have our second conference win."
This was SBU's first conference win against MSSU at Joplin since November 1, 2000. Kenney recorded her second triple-double of the season with 10 kills, 43 assists and 28 digs. She is the only person in the MIAA this year to record this feat. Palmer led SBU with 20 kills, Perry recorded the match high of 34 digs, and Hammerscmidt led the team with an attack percentage of .519 after having 14 kills of 17 attempts.
The Lady Bearcats will play tonight at 7 p.m. against Pittsburg State.
