hat can happen to past traditions is for them to be long forgotten. Allow SBU volleyball to be the prime example of this theory. At the end of the season, SBU was 5-20 in 2006 and 4-30 in 2005. Right now the Lady Bearcats stand at 8-13, one win behind the past two seasons combined. The Bearcats' two conference wins put them three conference wins away from the all time school record since SBU joined the MIAA in 1987. However, to get to their current record, they had to get through two matches in the past week: Rockhurst University and conference rival Missouri Southern State University.
Tuesday at Rockhurst University, the Bearcats struggled through the whole night.
"We had a breakdown on Monday," said Head Coach Kelly Richardson. "We didn't practice well. You practice how you play, and you see that our playing on Tuesday was how we practiced on Monday."
Sophomore Kelsey Stewart led the team with 10 kills and six assisted blocks. Junior Shyrah Perry continued her dominance of digs with 14. The loss moved SBU to 7-13.
With the loss behind them, SBU had three solid days of practice before taking on rival Missouri Southern. Last season SBU lost to Missouri Southern in game five, 15-17. SBU had won the first two games but lost the next three. For those on the team from last season, you could sense a desire to right what was wrong from the past.
SBU came out swinging a strong .286 hitting percentage. That compiled with four aces from game one gave SBU the edge over Southern 33-31. The level of energy stayed with the Bearcats into game two where the two teams battled to tie it three to three. From this point on, the Bearcats trailed by two the entire game to fall 29-31. The amount of energy used in games one and two doomed the Bearcats in game three. SBU hit .104 to MSSU's .213 to allow the Lions' victory 21-30.
In between games, Richardson reminded the girls that they must have pride in what they do, and they are better than how they just played. The comments sealed the Lions fate when SBU came back to win game four 30-19. And much like an earlier match against Missouri Western, SBU found themselves in a tight game five for a shot at another conference victory.
