Last Saturday night, the purple and white Bearcats from Southwest Baptist traveled to Maryville to take on the 10th ranked green and white Bearcats from Northwest Missouri State. What was expected to be a rather close game, considering the vast improvements SBU made in the off-season, got out of hand rather quickly. Northwest won by one of the most lop-sided scores in MIAA history, 86-13; the 86 points were the most points surrendered by an SBU team in the modern era.
In what looked like it might be a closer game than most expected after SBU held Northwest to 3rd and long on its first drive, a phantom pass interference call kept the drive alive, and Northwest eventually scored its first of 12 touchdowns on the night.
That was the beginning of some very questionable calls (and no-calls) by the officials on the night, which did not help the fact that the offense had some troubles moving the ball.
The Bearcat offense have a different look to it as junior Josh Vaughn took his first snaps at running back in his college career. For most of the game, Vaughn split time with junior Jeff Finnell.
True freshman quarterback Steve Gachette threw for two scores on the night, connecting with senior receivers LaMarcus Windham and Nick Smart.
Defensively for the Bearcats, junior safety Lavarus Rue led all defensive players with 14 tackles on the game.
Junior linebacker Jared Bankhead had a fumble recovery that he returned 42 yards to the Northwest 18 yard-line.
The loss was a tough one for the team, which gives them a record of 0-5 on the season (0-3 in MIAA), but the team looks forward to its Homecoming game this weekend against Truman State with a kick-off of 2 p.m.
The Bulldogs, who come into the game with a 3-2 record (1-2 in MIAA), are fresh off a win over Fort Hays State at home this past weekend.
The Bulldogs attempted 54 passes in their game with Fort Hays.
When combined with an SBU offense that averages nearly 50 passing attempts per game, look for an aerial assault this weekend, in what might turn out to be a rather long, but exciting game.
Look for SBU's defensive line to make a huge impact on the game as Truman likes to run a lot of plays with an empty backfield, meaning they will not have a running back set up in the backfield.
SBU will be looking to notch its first win of the season in front of what will probably be the largest crowd of the season, and its last Homecoming football game in the MIAA while Truman State will be looking to notch its first conference road win of the season.
