Student Government Association president Ivry Karamitros provided the invocation. Karamitros was followed by Dr. Kathy Brown, professor of music, and the Symphonic Winds leading the Alma Mater.
"This is an important occasion for our University," said Dr. C. Pat Taylor, SBU president when he greeted students, faculty, alumni and family.
Then sophomore Becca Koe, University Activities Council major events chair, introduced the Homecoming candidates along with their escorts.
The SBU Chorale sang, "Oh How Beautiful, This Finely Woven Earth."
Chorale was followed by the Jack and Edythe Fellows Global Ambassador awards announced by Dr. Taylor.
The recipients of these awards were John Edie, SBU alum of 1967 and executive pastor at Second Baptist Church Springfield, and Dr. Bernard Holmes, former SBU professor of discipleship and prayer and presently an adjunct professor on the Bolivar campus.
Shawn Summers, director of alumni and church relations, helped announce the recipient of the Edwin Lightfoot Distinguished Alumni Award, Jack Fellows, Southwest Baptist College alum of 1940. He is also a former recipient of the Life Service Award, which were the next awards presented.
Dr. G. Norman Weaver, Dr. James Hackney, Philip Dorth and Dr. Randy Arnett were the 2007 recipients. Each one is an alumni of SWBC or SBU.
The Life Service Award is given annually to graduates whose lives exemplify the principles upheld at SBU.
Dr. Randy Arnett, SBU alum of 1978, encouraged the mass of students.
"Thousands of SBU students serve everyday," said Arnett. "I challenge you to join that sea of SBU graduates who serve."
Before the benediction, Dr. Taylor concluded Honors Chapel.
"The challenge is for you to go out and make a difference," said Taylor.
