As the season for the Lady Bearcats moves past the halfway point, Southwest Baptist has hit a rough stretch. Between losing their middle-blocker to an ankle injury at Emporia and playing two top-tier teams of the conference SBU lost both matches.
SBU traveled 200 miles and came out swinging against the Lady Hornets of Emporia on Oct. 9 but fell short in game one 19-30.
They would continue to push their way against the #23 team in the nation. However, in game two the Lady Bearcats came up short once again, 23-30.
After game two, things took a turn for the worse.
At point number two, middle-blocker sophomore Trish Hammerschmidt went up for a key block. She came down wrong on her ankle and with that, the whole rotation had to be reworked. SBU would lose game three 23-30 to give them their fifth conference loss.
After two days of practice, SBU stepped onto the John Q. Hammons court to compete against #11 Pittsburg State University.
The Lady Bearcats fell to the Gorillas earlier this year in three games at Pittsburgh, Kan.
Fate seemed to not be in the favor of the Bearcats again as they fell to the Gorillas in three game (22-30, 12-30, 18-30).
"We had very good moments, but we lacked consistency, and that is why we lost," said Head Coach Kelly Richardson. "The girls came back to practice though and had great practices. They didn't freak out when she hurt her ankle. They played very calm, and that is a very huge step."
Sophomore Kinsey Palmer led the team with seven kills for each match.
Junior Shyrah Perry continued her solid season with 15 and 19 digs. Perry is currently ranked fourth in the conference in digs.
As the Lady Bearcats continued their stay at home, the competition continued to take its toll on SBU. SBU had three matches in the past week and fell in each.
To start the week, SBU took on the Lions of Fort Hays State University.
SBU started out strong by winning game one, 30-24. However, it would go downhill from there as SBU would lose games two, three and four to give the Lions their second conference win of the year.
Sophomore Brittni Jessen led SBU with 15 kills. Senior Chelsea Kenney recorded her sixth triple-double of the year (no other player in the MIAA has recorded any triple-doubles).
Friday night the ladies from West Florida University came into Bolivar.
The Argos, ranked 24th in the nation, would hand the Bearcats a loss in three games (22-30, 15-30, 26-30).
"Very proud of the way we fought in game three," said Richardson. "We need to find that consistency for an entire match."
Brittni Jessen again led SBU with eight kills.
After a short night of sleep, SBU took on #5 Washburn on Saturday afternoon.
Washburn would hand SBU their eighth conference loss of the season by defeating the Bearcats in three games (17-30, 20-30, 17-30).
Palmer led the Bearcats with seven kills.
SBU is now 2-8 in conference and 8-18 overall.
