The Southwest Baptist women's soccer team has had a very interesting last couple of weeks.
Regulation was not enough time to settle the match between the Lady Bearcats and Lions of Missouri Southern Oct. 5.
Both teams entered the match tied for fourth in conference play. Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern traded blows throughout regulation with neither team able to gain an advantage.
One key to the game was MIAA Defensive Player of the Week senior Aline Lopes and the Lady 'Cats back line holding the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week Nikki Llewellyn, scoreless.
In overtime, the Lady Bearcats began to take control. SBU out shot Missouri Southern 6-3 in overtime.
Then, with two and a half minutes left, senior forward Atefeh Heivary put home the game-winning shot to give Southwest Baptist the win.
This victory put SBU alone in third place in the MIAA. Even better for the Bearcats was the fact that they controlled their own destiny with remaining games against every team who sat ahead of them in the MIAA standings.
The week continued on a positive note for SBU as they headed north to play the fifth-ranked Jennies of Central Missouri.
The game lived up to its billing as it was hard-fought and contested from the start. In the third minute, the Jennies opened the scoring when Brittany Sharp put a ball past SBU keeper Lopes.
SBU was quick to respond as they tied it up in the eighth minute on a goal from freshman midfielder Katie Whalon.
After Whalon's goal, the game settled into a full fledged battle that saw six yellow cards administered by the referee, four of which went to the Lady Bearcats.
In the 85th minute, freshman forward Dominie Emmanuel continued her good season as she notched another goal off of an assist from her "partner in crime" Heivery.
