"The service opportunities are also beneficial to our students because they are all related to social service organizations, which are the kinds of organizations they will someday be working with," said Kilpatrick.
The group also hosts a GRE (Graduate Record Examination) preparation workshop in the fall, which is open not only to members, but to any student preparing for the exam.
The group also attends conferences for the national Psi Chi organization, one of which will be hosted at SBU this year.
The benefits of becoming a member of the organization are many.
"It helps you get to know the faculty better," said Kilpatrick. "Most of our students are preparing for graduate school so they will need letters of recommendation. We try to prepare them a bit for the future they are facing,"
After graduate school, students with psychology majors often pursue social work or counseling, specifically marriage and family work or work for the state.
"It's a fun way to get to know people in your major and give back to people in your school and the Bolivar community, which are opportunities you don't always get," said Jaclyn Stadt. "There are also a lot of leadership opportunities for the officers that help you to fine tune your skills."
For those who are not yet eligible to be members of Psi Chi, the Department of Behavioral Sciences also has the Behavioral Sciences Club for all majors and minors. The club's activities consist primarily of social activities and speakers.
Speakers in the past have included Terri Miller of the Polk County Drug Court, and alumni panels of past Behavioral Sciences degree graduates.
Last year the department hosted a panel of professors from the Redford College of Theology and Ministry with a discussion on the topic, 'Can there be a Christian psychology?'
The sponsor of the club is Pearleane Bresheares. The group meets once a month to talk about departmental news and new developments in the behavioral sciences field.
If students would like to become members of the Behavioral Sciences Club, they can fill out a form at the front desk of the Behavioral Sciences office in Gott Educational Center.
