Board of Trustees approve five-year plan

Southwest Baptist University's Board of Trustees approved the implementation of the University's five-year plan during one of their three annual meetings Oct. 15 and 16. According to Janet Juhlin, director of institutional effectiveness, the plan consists of seven initiatives and 41 goals.

University reports increase in enrollment

umbers have been released and there are 39 more students on the Southwest Baptist University main campus compared to last year. Bolivar campus enrollment increased from 1,521 to 1,560. Overall enrollment for all campuses (Bolivar, Lebanon, Mountain View, Salem and Springfield) increased from 3,503 to 3,539.

Mold in Leslie Hall causes

Students on Leslie Hall's first floor east who were forced to move after the University found mold in their dorm will be able to move back in when they return from Thanksgiving break. Director of Physical Plant Bob Glidwell said the students will move back into a floor with the carpet replaced by floor tiles, fresh paint, and mold and mildew resistant ceiling tiles.

Prospective students visit campus

Fall Visitation day, held Saturday, Oct. 20, was a time when prospective students and their families had an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Southwest Baptist University and the academics that are offered. Prospective students had the opportunity to interact with current students and see for themselves what it is like to be in college and experience the dorm life.

Students engage in alcohol awareness activities

Students participating in Southwest Baptist University's Alcohol Awareness Week experienced what it is like to be drunk and behind the wheel of a vehicle. Special simulator goggles, a golf cart and an obstacle course on the Goodson Student Union parking lot gave them a sense of the dangers of driving after drinking alcohol, without the danger.

SGA explores visitation issues

A highly debated issue on the SBU campus for some time has been the issue of visitation. Some individuals believe that dorms should be granted more visitation, and others do not like visitation at all. Several students came to Student Government upset over the lack of visitation and the inconsistency of visitation in the dorms.

Psi Chi and House of Hope offer help

Psi Chi and Sociology and Criminal Justice Society are working with House of Hope to serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and rape. Psi Chi and SCJS are asking students of Southwest Baptist University to help by donating money and goods to the cause.

SBU professor published in political humor book

Dr. Josh Compton, department chair and assistant professor of Communication at Southwest Baptist University, has two chapters published in the recently released edited book "Laughing Matters: Humor and American Politics in the Media Age" published by Routledge.

Sophomore Erica Whitfield wins Secret Agent

After a week of shaving cream and water guns, sophomore Erica Whitfield came out the top secret agent. Before the game began this year, key changes were made. Because of the sensitivity to recent school tragedies, the name "Assassins" was changed to "Secret Agent" and players were given cans of shaving cream instead of water guns.

Off-campus applications due Nov. 1

Applications for off-campus and January Term housing are now available through the Southwest Baptist University Student Life Office. According to Housing Coordinator Chris Keller, students planning to file for off-campus housing for the 2008 Jan Term and Spring Semesters must do so by 5 p.
