Southwest Baptist University's Board of Trustees approved the implementation of the University's five-year plan during one of their three annual meetings Oct. 15 and 16.
According to Janet Juhlin, director of institutional effectiveness, the plan consists of seven initiatives and 41 goals.
"The plan gives direction to the University," said Juhlin. "It establishes the priorities of SBU for the next five years."
Two teams of SBU faculty, staff and students conducted internal and external SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analyses and wrote reports on their findings. The internal environment team studied nine areas including academics, marketing, facilities, finances, technology, recruiting/retention, safety and security, student services and human resources.
The external environment team studied five areas including demographics, communities, and social relationships, competition, legal/political environment and economics/job market.
During a two day retreat last year, 48 participants from all areas of the University narrowed their results and formed a rough draft of the five-year plan.
At the board of trustees meeting, slight clarifications were made, and the plan was approved.
Initiative one is to promote a Christ-centered university. According to the plan, "It is the University's desire to elevate Christian distinctiveness in all areas of curriculum, student life, athletics and relationships with constituents."
Initiative two is to enrich the quality of life for SBU employees by providing opportunities for spiritual, physical, professional and financial advancement.
Initiative three is to promote the University's identity by promoting excellence in academics and service to Christ.
Supporting and strengthening academic excellence is the goal of initiative four.
Plans for growth and stewardship of resources serves as initiative five.
Growth in this area will reflect the mission of the University: to be Christ-centered, caring and academic in the preparation of servant leaders in a global society.
Initiative six is a plan for improved financial health. This plan will align annual and five-year budgeting to strategic planning and will promote the use of a comprehensive financial analysis of all programs.
Initiative seven is to improve the SBU Physical Plant and environment by developing a master plan for facilities and grounds maintenance that will ensure that buildings and grounds that are inviting, attractive and well-maintained.
"We have already implemented some initiatives because we saw the need," said Juhlin.
