Students on Leslie Hall's first floor east who were forced to move after the University found mold in their dorm will be able to move back in when they return from Thanksgiving break.
Director of Physical Plant Bob Glidwell said the students will move back into a floor with the carpet replaced by floor tiles, fresh paint, and mold and mildew resistant ceiling tiles. The cleaning process, done by Lee Environmental Services of Nixa, involves closing off the floor to contain the contaminated area, removing the carpet and using a disinfectant to clean the mold-affected areas. The ventilation system will also be cleaned.
"Most of the mold is attributable to the carpet itself," said Glidwell.
Glidwell explained that carpet is a good environment for mold growth and would be replaced by vinyl composition tile (VCT) similar to the tile in the Goodson Student Union.
While the mold was not at dangerous levels, those with particular sensitivity may have experienced some allergy symptoms, University officials said.
"We want to be extremely proactive and move quickly on it," said Dr. C. Pat Taylor, president.
By Oct. 20, the students were relocated, and Lee Environmental Services were on campus Oct. 22 to begin the cleaning.
Sophomore Joanna Bellis moved in to Memorial Hall.
"It was a hassle to move on such short notice," said Bellis. "But I think it was wise for SBU to take care of it right away for our safety. I wish it would have fully been taken care of last year but I understand it was too short of a break for them to get it all in just a short week."
"Memorial has been very nice to accept us into their dorm and Landen was very helpful and supportive to us during the move," said Bellis.
Glidwell estimated that the renovation will cost between 80,000 and 100,000 dollars.
"We do have money set aside for that, so it won't affect any other budgets," said Glidwell.
In January, the south wing of Leslie Hall will be renovated.
