Psi Chi and Sociology and Criminal Justice Society are working with House of Hope to serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and rape.
Psi Chi and SCJS are asking students of Southwest Baptist University to help by donating money and goods to the cause.
House of Hope serves as a local shelter for victims of domestic violence but also assists women who are victims of sexual assault and rape.
While these women are in the hospital receiving treatment, their clothes and other personal items can be taken as evidence against their attackers, leaving them with nothing on exiting the hospital.
House of Hope tries to offer victims a comfort kit that provides them with clothes, small toiletries and some comfort items like journals and pens.
"Our agency operates on limited resources and does not have the additional funding necessary to provide these kits to every victim," said Deanna Mueller, executive director of House of Hope. "Psi Chi and SCJS are making it possible for victims of sexual assault to find comfort in a very uncomfortable situation by trying to provide enough kits for an entire year's worth of crisis response."
Psi Chi and SCJS are helping House of Hope by sponsoring a drive at SBU to collect items for comfort kits as well as money to buy materials in order to make fleece blankets for the women.
Students can donate t-shirts, journals, pens, new toothbrushes and small toiletries such as lotion, shampoos and conditioners.
SBU students can drop off donations through Nov. 2 in the Behavioral Sciences office on the second floor of Gott Educational Center.
Monetary donations for blankets may be brought to the office or given to any of the Psi Chi officers: president senior Jaclyn Stadt, vice president senior Janna Wenzl, treasurer senior Sara Robbins, secretary senior Sarah Danford and program chair junior Collin Christensen.
