A highly debated issue on the SBU campus for some time has been the issue of visitation. Some individuals believe that dorms should be granted more visitation, and others do not like visitation at all.
Several students came to Student Government upset over the lack of visitation and the inconsistency of visitation in the dorms. Student Government, acting as the student voice, decided to further investigate this issue.
First, SGA had the dorm council representatives from each dorm look into this issue in their specific dorm.
The representatives reported back, and results were once again mixed across the board.
Most dorms said the residents were split 50-50.
Half of the students wanted more visitation, while the other half found visitation an annoyance and did not want any more than they already have.
The spokesperson for Memorial Hall was the only exception to the dorms.
Memorial is currently not having visitation on Thursday due to the fact that the visitation time conflicts with the R.A.'s schedules making it impossible for enough R.A.'s to be present.
It was said that Memorial residents wanted to have at least Thursday visitation like the other dorms.
Other than Memorial Hall, SGA was back to the same issue of a split opinion on visitation.
The next step taken was research.
Student Government thought that other universities face the same split opinion problem on visitation and decided to look into what visitation policies other schools use.
Representatives went out and researched a large number of universities' visitation hours. Baylor, Evangel, Mid-America Nazarene and Hunting University were just a few of the universities that were poled to give an idea of the variety.
The results ranked SBU's visitation hours on the lower side but still in the mix with other schools.
There were quite a few universities that had a lot of visitation hours every day, such as Baylor, but other factors go into this decision.
One factor is that Baylor has security cameras on every hall.
This is a factor that SBU might look into in further years if visitation expands.
There were also a couple of schools that made the once a week SBU visitation seem like a lot. Such schools included College of the Ozarks, which has "open house" once a month.
The research has given Student Government some ideas of different ways to incorporate visitation without making those opposed to it upset.
These ideas are going to be drafted up, along with research, to pass on so that visitation can be looked into and possibly renovated.
Visitation is currently every Thursday in all dorms from 7-10 p.m. and every first and third Saturday from 7 p.m. to midnight.
If anyone has any thoughts on the current visitation, Student Government is interested in hearing those opinions.
If interested, please email Student Government at sga@sbuniv.edu or attend an SGA meeting on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. in Davis Theater in Goodson Student Union.
