On Thursday, Oct. 26, the Residence Life Association sponsored a 1940's themed dancing night. "Dancing With the Stars: A Night of Glamour" was held in Blair Intramural Gym from 8 to 10 p.m. The event was held as a part of Southwest Baptist University's Alcohol Awareness Week.
Approximately 130 people attended the event with couples spinning across the lighted floor to the tunes of Frank Sinatra and faster paced modern music. Many participants dressed in 1940's style attire from suspenders and fedoras on guys to pinned up hair and flowing dresses and skirts on girls. Refreshments and prizes were provided for all in attendance.
Part of the event featured West Coast Swing dancing lessons. Three instructors from the Sonshine Ballroom led the way for couples as they learned basic moves such as the "sugar push" and the "tuck turn." West Coast Swing is an updated style of swing dance that originated with the jazz era of the 1920's and can be adapted to dancing with modern pop beats.
The Student Government Association also sponsored a costume contest with prizes for the winners at the end of the event.
First place for the women went to senior Brea Carico, who donned a long formal dress and faux fur, second place went to freshman Natosha Hoduski and third went to sophomore Kelly Crosby. A fedora clad sophomore Kyle Herrington took first place for the men, second went to sophomore Cameron Ayers, and third to freshman Patrick Steffen. Winners took home Wal-Mart gift cards.
However, the primary purpose of the night's festivities was to cap off Southwest Baptist's Alcohol Awareness Week.
The resident assistants created a video presentation to be shown during the event, highlighting the dangers of drunk driving featuring statistics related to deaths and photos of alcohol related accidents. The presentation also featured the lighter side of how the media portrays drinking through the use of humorous alcohol related commercials.
