About 100 Southwest Baptist University students, faculty and staff who had reserved flu shot times received their vaccinations Tuesday, Oct. 30.
The $15 vaccination was administered by the Polk County Health Department at the SBU Health Center.
While this vaccination was a one-time offer at the SBU Health Center, students can get vaccinated by the Polk County Health Department or their local doctors.
Students can take other precautions to prevent from contracting the flu virus.
Washing hands with soap and water or using anti-bacterial hand sanitizer often prevents the spread of germs in public places.
Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth since these are prime areas for germs to enter the body.
Forget all of those lessons on sharing learned in kindergarten. Sharing personal items with anyone, even family members, promotes the spread of bacteria and viruses.
When coughing or sneezing, always use a tissue or the crook of your arm to cover your nose and mouth. Do not use the hand since any germs expelled from the body will be transferred to the next thing touched. Always wash hands or use anti-bacterial hand sanitizer on hands after sneezing or coughing, and dispose of the tissue.
Students should also drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly and get plenty of rest.
These three things keep the body in top condition, and the body can better fight off viruses and bacteria.
Exercising and rest can also help keep stress levels down since stress can also cause physical illness.
If a student does get sick, he or she should remain at home to prevent from spreading the virus.
If a student has to miss class, notes from the nurse must be obtained the first day class is missed for the absence to be excused.
For more information, contact the SBU Health Center at 328-1888 or the Polk County Health Center at 326-7250.
