The ladies of Leslie Hall are getting into the Christmas spirit of giving this year by sponsoring a toy collection for children who otherwise might not be getting any presents this year.
The toys will be Christmas gifts for children of clients of Alpha House, a pregnancy help center in Bolivar that serves all of Polk County.
"We just wanted to do something for the community, and since I work at Alpha House, I knew the need was there," said Sarah Nuxoll, Leslie Hall resident director and client services and education director at Alpha House.
Alpha House is a non-profit organization that not only helps couples with unplanned pregnancies but also offers help with adoption services and post-abortion trauma. Some of the specific services Alpha House offers are free pregnancy tests, parent preparation courses, maternity and baby clothes and a 24-hour crisis hotline.
While many may assume that Alpha House clients may be young teenagers, some are actually married couples with older children.
"Many of the clients have older children and do not have money to purchase Christmas gifts," said Nuxoll.
Since the gifts are for specific families and children the toy drive works a little different than a general toy collection. Donation boxes will include flyers that describe each child's size, age and Christmas wishes so students can donate gifts that will make these children's Christmas dreams come true. The gifts should be brand new, unopened and unwrapped.
Information about children and gifts can be picked up and dropped off in donation boxes in residence hall lobbies and various locations on campus from Nov. 26 to Dec. 7.
There will be a gift-wrapping party at the end of the gift collection the first week of December to make the gifts beautiful for Christmas. Anyone can come to the wrap party to help. The specific date and time of the party will be announced at a later date.
