Ah, the romantic comedy genre, man's favorite movie to write about. While I was lamenting in the theatre that I was not reviewing "Rambo" or another action-packed thriller, I learned to appreciate the value of movies like "27 Dresses." "27 Dresses" was released in theatres Jan. 18.
Though the movie involves many twists and vulgarities that obstruct the real message, one can clearly see from the resolution of the movie that no matter how muddled male and female relationships are, they should always center on truth.
Featuring "Grey's Anatomy" star Katherine Heigl as the main character Jane, the movie excites interest from the beginning with her frantically changing dresses in a taxi cab to be present at two wedding receptions occurring at the same time.
Jane's job is facilitating weddings; helping choose for the bride everything from dresses to desserts. She is a successful woman who is always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
After being part of the sideshow for 27 weddings, Jane is getting impatient with the man she secretly obsesses over, her boss George played by Edward Burns.
At the same moment she decides to tell her feelings to George at an office party, her stunningly beautiful sister Tess played by Malin Akerman unexpectedly shows up at the party catches George's eye.
The two hit it off and months later become engaged, partly because Jane reveals all of George's likes and dislikes to her sister. With Tess's many lies about herself, including being a vegetarian, loving dogs and hiking, their relationship ignites.
While Jane is worried about her sister's relationship built on lies, another man, Kevin played by James Marsden, enters the picture. Kevin is a journalist for "The New York Journal" with a crush on Jane. He must balance his potential big break, a story on Jane and her business with his feelings for her.
Do Tess and George get married? Does Jane finally unite with her secret crush? The rest can be seen at the theatres.
Though the truth can hurt, it is more beneficial for people to be real with their significant other rather than marry someone who does not really know who they are.
This movie shows the perils of being untruthful and suppressing one's feelings for too long. For those men out there who are sick of sitting through boring romantic comedies, "27 Dresses" sparked even my interest as a cast of many stars use plot twists to keep everyone awake and happy.
