Matthew West released his fourth CD "Something to Say" Tuesday, Jan. 15. Many Southwest Baptist University students remember when Matthew West came to SBU last semester with Newsong, Todd Agnew, Britt Nicole and others on the Christmas Promise Tour.
That night West performed several new songs that were on his new album. Students were also allowed to pre-order the new CD that evening.
The reason why the new CD was called "Something to Say" is because Matthew West underwent surgery last May on his vocal cords. Doctors found a vascular polyp on his left vocal chord. West went for a few months without speaking. When it was time to start recording, West had something to say.
The CD carries on with the contemporary touch with a new message. West's core message of the album is "no matter how many mistakes we've made or trials we've faced, it's the brokenness of our lives that God uses to give us something to say to the world."
The song "Something to Say" encourages listeners to have their lives "heard." The main idea of this song revolves around the lyrics, "God is love and love speaks through."
West wants those who feel doubtful or insecure about themselves as a disciple to know that they have the ability to share about their lives in Jesus.
He focuses on a quote from C.S. Lewis in his music and life:
"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."
West also encloses songs that deal with issues and joys of life.
The song "Safe and Sound" is a good example with West singing to his daughter on how he will take care of her.
Another moving song is "Save a Place for Me." It takes account of someone close to him that died and dealing with that struggle.
An uplifting song that praises God is "You are Everything." The lyrics are an analysis of how flawed we are as people, yet God is still there to save us and becomes everything to us.
Matthew West has an amazing biography and testimony that he shares through his music and on his websites.
